8 Coconut Oil Beauty Remedies to Get Flawless, Glowing Skin Naturally
You’ve probably heard it hundreds of times – coconut oil is amazing for your skin. But have you ever wondered why? What gave it its cult status? Coconut oil suits all skin types, and is especially great for sensitive skin because of its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. We did some digging and found some amazing at-home skin remedies using coconut oil.
1. Body Scrub a Dub Dub
Victoria’s Secret angel Lily Aldridge swears by her DIY coconut oil body scrub. “Coconut oil and sugar makes a great at-home body scrub. Plus, it smells amazing.” If it’s good enough for a VS model, it’s good enough for us! To give yourself a pampering session fit for an angel, simply mix one part coconut oil with two parts brown sugar. Bring your scrub with you in your shower, and gently rub your entire body. You’ll jump out of the shower with silky smooth, exfoliated, and hydrated skin.
2. Body Butter For Cracked Hands And Feet
Another DIY skin remedy loved by a Victoria’s Secret angel is coconut oil body butter. Blonde bombshell Candice Swanepoel uses coconut oil all over her body, and credits it for her healthy glow. Coconut oil is extremely hydrating, and can soothe your driest and roughest body parts, such as dry feet and hands. You can either apply coconut oil to your skin at night, wrap with a warm towel, and leave overnight, or you can add a few teaspoons to a foot/hand bath and relax over a couple of episodes of your fave Netflix show.
3. Supports Healthy Skin Aging
Coconut oil is full of antioxidants, and helps prevent the formation of free radicals that contribute to damaged skin as you continue to age. Furthermore, since it’s great for moisturizing, it helps diminish wrinkles that have already developed. Simply massage some oil into your skin before hopping into bed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as you catch some much-needed zzz’s.
4. Tackle Those Stretch Marks
Along with fighting wrinkles, coconut oil is also great for both preventing and removing those pesky stretch marks. When you develop stretch marks, you can only see the marks on the outer layer of your skin, known as the epidermis. Unfortunately, the scar goes much deeper, into your dermis layer. To eradicate a stretch mark, you have to dig deeper and heal your dermis. Because coconut oil has the ability to be absorbed deep enough to reach the dermis, it has a much higher success rate at healing stretch marks. Slather a generous amount of coconut oil on your stretch mark every night and massage for 30 seconds – 1 minute. Rinse oil off the next morning if necessary.
5. Detox Bath
Other than eating, my favourite de-stressing activity is soaking in a hot tub after a long day. Giving yourself time to unwind in a bath relaxes your muscles and your mind, allowing you to sleep like a baby afterwards. To add some detox to your bath routine, simply add ¼ cup Epsom salts, ¼ cup coconut oil, and any essential oils you have handy (eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, and rose are my personal go-tos). The Epsom salts contain magnesium, which help relieve muscle tension and joint pain. Take a cue from actress Phoebe Tonkin and add in some coconut oil to hydrate your skin as you soak.
6. Scalp Serum
To provide relief to your dry scalp, heat a few tablespoons of coconut oil in a pan or in the microwave, and apply it to dry hair. Leave it in for at least 30 minutes, or slip on a shower cap and let the oil work its magic as you sleep. Rinse off and you’ll immediately notice less itchiness, less frizz, and luscious locks.
7. Cuticle Oil
Who doesn’t like a nice manicure? To keep nails moisturized and cuticles strong, try incorporating coconut oil in your next at-home manicure. Apply some oil into your cuticles to kill germs and loosen up cuticles.
8. Shaving Gel
Shaving giving you anxiety? Don’t stress – use coconut oil to give you a smoother shave, prevent ingrown hairs and razor burns, and add moisture all in one! Simply rub onto skin, shave, dry, and show off those legs.
