Busy vs. Productive - What's the Difference?
Your busyness might be sacrificing your creativity - how horrifying does that sound?
Raise your hand if you’re guilty of using the phrase, “I wish I could do XYZ, but I’m too busy!” Almost all of us have probably said or heard this common saying at some point in our lives. Busyness can take up a lot of energy both physically and emotionally. The best way to be productive, is by being less busy and decluttering your mind to focus on the most important tasks.
Being busy can take away your creativity in many ways. Being busy can make it easier for other people’s opinions to get in your head, which isn’t what you would want especially when you are feeling unsure about what you think or feel.
There’s research that shows the relationship between busyness and productivity (The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and The Making of the Western World by Iain McGilchrist). As we are aware, the brain is divided into two hemispheres, the right brain and the left brain. To simply state their functions, the right brain is known for creativity, and the left brain for logical thinking/reasonings. The left brain’s activity can affect the right brain’s activity, meaning the lesser active the left brain is, the more creativity actions your right brain can take, and vice versa.
This ultimately implies your left brain’s action can destruct your right brain’s function - creativity. Each one of our creativity is irreplaceable, and even when we tend to value the left brain more, our right brain is the one with the ability to come up with creative solutions, and that’s what makes us unique.
It’s important to analyze our busyness and to focus on putting our effort and energy on something that truly defines who we are and represents what we want. Be less busy and be productive. :)
