Three Ships #HerHustle Interview with The Content Planner Founder, Kat Gaskin - Three Ships

Katherine Gaskin, founder of The Content Planner, content creator, blogger, Instagrammer, and a graphic designer, lives every girl’s dreams - working and travelling all over the world. We asked her what it’s like to work in creative industry, challenges she’s faced as a graphic designer, and the worst piece of advice she’s ever received!

What inspired you to start The Content Planner?
At first, I created The Content Planner for myself. As a graphic designer, content creator, blogger and Instagrammer (@katgaskin), I needed a place to house all of my Instagram growth strategies, content ideas, collaborations and post schedule.

For years, I wrote everything down in a small daily planner and on endless sticky notes, but I needed something more.

Enter The Content Planner.

After the first trial launch, I quickly realized there were a ton of women like me who were having the exact same struggle with their content planning.

What challenges have you faced as a designer and content creator?
Since I shoot the majority of my content while I travel, Mother Nature has proven to be both my greatest ally and enemy.

From the scorching midday heat of Bali to ‘Perfect Storm’ conditions sailing to the Great Barrier Reef, you have to be prepared to battle the elements — and still get the shot.

Then sometimes, you simply have to wave the white flag, put your camera away and just appreciate the power of Mother Nature. As they say, the sun will come out tomorrow.

"The wonderful part of being your own boss is that you
don’t have a typical day. You can do WHATEVER you want!
You have complete freedom and it’s absolutely liberating."

What does your typical day look like?
One day, I could be waking up on Maui, surfing every morning and shooting photos of pineapples at the beach.

If I’m in Toronto (my home base), I’m either working from my home office or Make Lemonade.

Regardless of where I am in the world, I always have my laptop and phone with me to tackle work if I need to.

What was the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
An ex-best friend told me to stop focusing on Instagram and get my head out of the clouds. She seriously had me re-considering this whole “Instagram” thing, but I’m so happy I didn’t take her advice.

Do you have any morning routines or evening rituals to help you stay balanced?
I love the process of making my morning coffee (grinding the beans and everything) then journaling before I dive into emails and work.

What’s one skincare product you can’t live without?
Sheet masks! They not only quench my sun and salt-drenched skin, but are also a big part of my self-care. They’re affordable, nourishing, relaxing and force me to simply take 30 minutes for myself even if I had a crazy day.
